When I spoke at Career Day at my old prep school, I didn’t sugarcoat anything. I told the truth: not all “good jobs” are good for you. You’ll be told to chase prestige, stability, and name-brand employers. And yes, those things are seductive — especially when you’ve spent your whole life performing for gold stars and perfect GPAs. But the real test isn’t whether you can land the job. It’s whether you can survive doing it every day without losing your mind. A paycheck can’t compensate for a deep sense of purposelessness. And people will pressure you to stay because your job sounds good on paper. Don’t confuse social approval with actual satisfaction. Your twenties are the best time to experiment, fail fast, and figure out what doesn’t feel right — because each misstep brings you closer to what does. Choose curiosity over compliance. Choose real engagement over empty optics. And if something feels wrong, trust that instinct. Don’t wait for a midlife crisis to admit that maybe — just maybe — your life should feel meaningful.
